Vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and seeds have always been a part of the human diet. So, what’s all the fuss about? Recent data shows that retail sales of “plant-based” products are up 20% from last year, making it a $3.3 billion industry and more than just a flash in the pan. During this interactive discussion, Joe DePippo of Tournant, a boutique consulting firm focused on helping clients champion “better food”, will provide an overview of the plant-based foods landscape, including what’s driving consumer interest and innovation.
Joining him in the conversation and providing different points of view on the subject will be Chicago-based Greenleaf Foods, whose category-pioneering brands include Lightlife Foods and Field Roast Grain Meat Co.

A 40-year veteran in the food industry, Joe has experienced firsthand its evolution from conventional to clean. Holding senior leadership roles with leading branded meat companies such as Pilgrim’s Pride, ConAgra, Perdue Farms and Hain Pure Protein, he was at the forefront of introducing meats raised without antibiotics to the marketplace over the last 20 years. Most recently, Joe served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of NatureRaised Farms at Tyson Foods, where he was responsible for developing and launching the brand, which entered Tyson into the natural foods business. Today, Joe is a partner in Tournant, a boutique consultancy that collaborates with companies on strategy, insights and innovation that drive clean, sustainable, “better food.” Because its roots are in the animal protein business, the firm has proactively stayed abreast of and works with brands on both sides of the fence, providing a unique, balanced perspective to the plant-based trend.
